Fired Up About Flash Fiction

Managing Editor Katey Schultz reflects on Cheek Teeth Blog, which is open to submissions of flash fiction year-round. Katey writes from the road.

Cheek Teeth has been around a little over 7 months now, publishing content every Wednesday and Saturday that explores literary arts and artisan culture. We're also publishing flash fiction the first week of every month, and when I first envisioned the kind of content I wanted to see on this blog, I hadn't realized just how powerful debuting in the world of flash could be.

Publishing flash on Cheek Teeth feels--like the genre itself--immediately fulfilling. So far we've published legends in the field like Bruce Holland Rogers and introduced up and coming writers such as Emily J. Lawrence. This fall we'll debut new work by award-winning author Sherrie Flick as well as a first-time fiction publication by Jim Shelly. To celebrate Jim's accomplishment, we've arranged for a visual artist to create a stop-motion animation video inspired by the story.

Lovers of flash know how addicting it can be, but if you're new to the genre you might find it a little challenging to sift through all the flash-only mags and find consistently high-quality, well-crafted stories. Fear not! Here's a list of a few of our faves. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do...and thanks to all of Cheek Teeth's flash writers for keeping us in good company.

Check out: Smokelong Quarterly, Flash Fiction Chronicles, Quick Fiction, Flash: The International Short-Short Story Magazine, and Flash Fiction Online, for starters. Cheek Teeth accepts flash fiction year round through our free, easy-to-use online submission manager.
